Multifunctional photoelectrochemical systems for coupled water treatment and high-value product generation: current status, mechanisms, remaining challenges, and future opportunities

Multifunctional photoelectrochemical (PEC) systems for coupled water treatment and high-value product generation have received widespread attention because of the high efficiency in solar energy conversion, less secondary pollution, and the benefit from high-value product generation. This paper reviews several kinds of multifunctional PEC processes, namely, water treatment coupled with H2 or H2O2 evolution or CO2 reduction, integration of water treatment and desalination, and electricity production from water treatment. The review emphasizes the performance of different processes, analyzes their pros and cons, and summarizes the mechanisms. It also figures out the remaining challenges toward the applied photoelectrodes, supporting electrolytes and reactor design, and provides perspectives on photoelectrode and process development.
