The OPO Editorial Team would like to introduce readers to a brand-new look for Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics. The new design and presentation of this issue represents the first significant style update to the journal since the purple colour palette was introduced in 2011, and the first comprehensive design change since the familiar eye motif first appeared on the cover in 1998, over 20 years ago (Figure 1).

This is certainly not to say that OPO has stood still. First published by The College of Optometrists in 1981, a year after its founding, the last four decades have seen a great number of innovations and changes that have contributed to OPO becoming the international, interdisciplinary home for high quality vision science and optometric research that it is today. From its beginnings as a manually typeset printed journal published three times per year and sent to subscribers by post, OPO has evolved into a bi-monthly, online only publication, and the top-ranked optometry journal in the world.

So what are the new changes and what do they mean for OPO authors and readers? First, the new logo and journal cover are clean, contemporary, and most importantly, legible and more suitable for use across digital platforms including the Wiley Online Library, the OPO app and social media (Figures 2 and 3). This will help to create a recognisable brand for OPO; it will also fit seamlessly with the College's visual identity. The new modern cover design will generally feature an image selected from the contents of each issue.

Second, the changes are not merely matters of appearance. We have adopted our publisher Wiley's New Journal Design, which uses a standardized article format that is ‘future ready’ and optimized for online publication. The new layout and sans serif fonts for text and equations will improve readability and make key article information stand out. These technical innovations aim to improve the author experience by providing a more efficient publishing process: reducing the typesetting and layout checking time and reducing the number of errors that require correction at the proofing stage. By standardizing the presentation of the journal, OPO aims to reflect its high quality standards, professionalism, and improve readability. The New Journal Design includes a new Key Points section for all original articles, with three bullet points highlighting implications drawn from the reported work and explored in the discussion section, such as what the study adds to the existing literature, its clinical significance and implications for patient care.

Finally, we have updated the OPO Author Guidelines to reflect the technical requirements of the new design and improve the author experience. This includes new guidance on preparing manuscripts for submission, information on article preparation support and resources available from our publisher, and clear instructions for formatting and references. The new guidelines aim to make the submission process more streamlined and efficient, saving time for authors, reviewers and the production team so that accepted manuscripts are published to a high standard and made available to readers as soon as possible.

The true foundation of OPO is its world class, international content, the original research, editorial opinions and scholarly discourse that is made possible entirely thanks to the editorial board, authors and reviewers. OPO content has been developed over the past 20 years to include annual special issues, invited reviews and editorials, and will continue to keep pace with the rapidly changing research and scholarly publishing landscapes. Our growing impact is evidenced by the recently announced 2020 Journal Impact Factors (IF), where OPO received its highest ever 2-year and 5-year IFs, 3.117 and 3.328, respectively, and for the seventh consecutive year is the top-ranked optometry journal in the world.

We hope you like the new look OPO as much as we do, and as always, look forward to receiving your submissions.
