Molecular Microbiology: A new vision and expanded scope
Molecular Microbiology ( IF 3.6 ) Pub Date : 2021-08-11 , DOI: 10.1111/mmi.14791
John D. Helmann

Molecular Microbiology is announcing a new vision for the journal and is expanding both its scope and editorial board to cover innovative and emerging areas across all domains of microbiology.

A new vision: Molecular Microbiology will encompass all areas of microbiology, from basic to translational research. The journal aims at attracting research content of the highest quality and novelty. It will publish studies of all microbes (Bacteria, Archaea, eukaryotic microorganisms, and Viruses), while retaining its historical emphasis on studies that provide significant new biological insights into the systems under study. It is expected that contributions will lead to a deeper understanding of the molecular principles underlying basic physiological processes, mechanisms, biological functions, or interactions between microbes, their hosts, or the environment. Insights should be supported by quantitative data obtained through cellular, biochemical, bioinformatic, imaging, structural, genomic, or genetic approaches. We welcome breakthroughs made using emerging methodologies and cutting-edge technologies. The journal encourages cross-disciplinary approaches including the use of computational analyses to inform experimental studies. The journal will thereby strengthen its service to the broader microbiology research community.

Expanded scope includes but not limited to:
  • Cell biology
  • Cell–cell communication and signaling pathways
  • Evolution
  • Enzymology
  • Gene expression and regulation
  • Gene transfer
  • Host–microbe interactions
  • Intracellular organization, architecture
  • Macromolecular synthesis
  • Membrane biogenesis and function
  • Metabolism
  • Microbial ecology
  • Microbiota, microbiome
  • Mutualistic and symbiotic relationships
  • Pathogenicity, virulence
  • Physiology
  • Structural biology
  • Synthetic microbiology
  • Traffic and transport

New editorial team: Molecular Microbiology will be edited by John Helmann and Thierry Soldati as co-Editors-in-Chief. The co-Editors-in-Chief are assembling an expanded editorial team with a broader range of expertise to provide expert, constructive, and thorough peer-review service in all the areas published in the journal. Additional editors, including many former editors of Cellular Microbiology, will be recruited to cover the expanded scope of the journal. The editors will be supported by an expanded editorial advisory board, including many former members of the board of Cellular Microbiology.

Thierry Soldati will serve as co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal starting October 2021, after serving as Editor-in-Chief of Cellular Microbiology since 2017. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, University of Geneva, where his group studies infection and dissemination of pathogenic Mycobacterium marinum using the amoeba Dictyostelium as a model system.

John Helmann will serve as co-Editor-in-Chief. He has been Editor-in-Chief of Molecular Microbiology since 2009 and is currently a Professor in the Department of Microbiology at Cornell University, where his group studies metal ion homeostasis and cell envelope stress responses in Bacillus subtilis.

Publishing model: Molecular Microbiology will continue to be published under the hybrid model and offers publishing options to the microbiology community across the globe. Authors may choose to publish at no cost under the terms of the journal’s standard copyright transfer agreement, or open access under the terms of a Creative Commons License. The journal offers a hybrid open access option for authors to make their research open access. Transitional agreements signed with Wiley grant authors from participating institutions the right to publish open access. The journal is embracing open research practices. It has a strong data sharing policy, and is considering implementing a flexible transparent peer-review option.
