Chinese students fight back against visa rejections

The United States has been ramping up efforts to protect its high technology, and one part of that strategy involves barring certain Chinese graduate students from studying in the country. Former President Donald Trump issued a proclamation that blocks visas to Chinese graduate students and postgraduate researchers with ties to an entity in China "that implements or supports China's 'military-civil fusion strategy.'" The policy has been continued under President Joe Biden. Although the U.S. government contends this affects only a small number of students, one study suggests it could affect 3000 to 5000 of the roughly 19,000 Chinese students who start graduate programs each year. A group of Chinese students who have had visas denied or revoked and supporters are waging a public relations campaign and considering a lawsuit to have the presidential proclamation reversed.
