In 2015, the Lancet Commission detailed the urgent need for equitable surgical care prioritizing the importance of global surgery to address global burdens of disease.1 Nearly 30% of the global burden of disease is attributed to surgically treatable conditions. The total number of neurosurgeons worldwide is 49 940, with an estimated neurosurgeon density of only 3.56 per 1 000 000 persons.2 An augmented neurosurgical workforce is needed to address the number of 13.8 million essential neurosurgical cases per year worldwide.3 Scaling up surgical services in low- to middle-income countries (LMICs) could prevent up to 77.2 million disability adjusted life years (DALYs) per year.4
