From weak to strong: axial noncovalent interactions of platinum(II) center with two nucleophilic iodines are very weak, anti-cooperative, and dispersive in nature in the ground electronic state. Depopulation of the anti-bonding σ*(I⋅⋅⋅Pt⋅⋅⋅I) orbital in the excited electronic state results in substantial strengthening of the interactions, which become partially covalent and cooperative.
