Introducing the JACS Au Editors: Wasiu Lawal and Christopher Jones
JACS Au Pub Date : 2021-07-26 , DOI: 10.1021/jacsau.1c00286

Here we present the last in our series of editorials introducing the inaugural JACS Au editorial team. Wasiu Lawal is the Assistant Managing Editor for JACS Au, playing the key role interfacing between the editorial team (Duboc, Flitsch, Jones, Lee, Maulide, Priestley, Xu) and ACS Publications. As Editor-in-Chief, I am responsible for the vision and direction of the journal, ensuring smooth journal operations, while targeting a consistent, high quality author and reviewer experience. Together we strive to deliver an outstanding product to the global chemistry community, ensuring rigorous and fair peer review as well as rapid processing and publication. Wasiu A. Lawal

Current Institution: ACS Publications Current position: Assistant Managing Editor, JACS Au Education: BS, Lagos State University (Nigeria); MS, University of Houston-Clear Lake; PhD, University of Texas at Arlington Research interests: Environmental chemistry, water treatment Hobbies: Watching soccer, music, road trips, cooking Hometown: Houston, Texas, USA; Lagos, Nigeria What would you be if you were not a chemist? Maybe a political scientist. Favorite places? I enjoyed visiting Niagara Falls right before the pandemic started. What are your top tips for writing a successful paper? Your research is what needs to be novel, how you write it does not have to be. Let the literature be your guide. What book has had an impact on your life or career? The Extraordinary Leader by Zenger and Folkman If you were an element, what would you be? Iron. Not expensive, but very useful. Advice for young scientists? Mentors are important, actually, they are vital and every young scientist needs one to be successful. Make sure you have at least one, even if you need to go out of your department or institution to find them. What “gadget” can you not live without? Double screens on my computer! Unexpected career shifts? Going from a PhD student who always wanted to work in the chemical industry to someone who helps run a scientific journal. Role models? My mum who recently passed away. Also, Percy Julian for paving the way as a Black chemist in less friendly times. Finally, Antoine Lavoisier (who happens to be my birthday mate). Christopher W. Jones

Current Institution: Georgia Institute of Technology Current position: William R. McLain Chair& Professor of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Homepage:https://jones.chbe.gatech.edu/ Education: BSE, Michigan; MS/PhD/Postdoctoral, Caltech Research interests: Materials, Catalysis, Adsorption Hobbies: Ice Hockey, Auto Racing, Music, Travel Hometowns: Atlanta, GA, USA; Troy, MI, USA; What would you be if you were not a chemist? Unemployed and unhappy. Favorite places? African wilderness – Okavango Delta, Serengeti, etc. What are your top tips for writing a successful paper? Start an outline early. Know prior literature well. Understand your new contributions. What book has had an impact on your life or career?Cathedrals of Science by Patrick Coffey. I realized some of our science heroes were flawed human beings too. How do you destress? Driving my cars on racetracks on weekends around the southeastern USA. Example: Do an internet search for Road Atlanta. Advice for young scientists? Invest time and energy in understanding who you are as a scientist. Success does not derive from trying to be someone else. Talent you do not have but want? Speaking multiple languages. Unexpected career shifts? As a catalysis-focused PhD student, I did not expect to study separations, work closely with a start-up company, or try to tackle climate change. Unanticipated benefits of being an academic chemist? Friends all over the world. Better understanding of global cultures through personal connections. Through these introductions to our editorial team,(1−3) we hope that the community will feel comfortable approaching us with new ideas for the journal or any questions they have about their current, past, or future submissions to the journal. As a new journal, authors and reviewers have the opportunity to join with the editors and editorial advisory board to actively shape the journal, creating a publication unlike the current array of offerings. To this end, we invite your submissions, suggestions, and feedback as we build on the legacy of excellence of JACS while leading the charge into the open access publishing era. This article references 3 other publications.
