Associations between IgG Levels in Bull Sires and Innate Immune Parameters in Their Daughters

Abstract

The studies for blood of bull sires have provided the opportunity to use the level of serum immunoglobulins of the G isotype as a biomarker to classify the animals according to stability and variability in the syntheses of antibodies. Based on the produced classification, the bulls’ progeny first-calf heifers were allocated into two groups. The objective of the survey is to study the innate immunity of first-calf heifers that are the progeny of bull sires having steady-state (group one) and unsteady-state (group two) IgG values. In autumn and spring, the blood was sampled from the animals in order to estimate the leucocyte count with the calculation formula and the concentrations of immunoglobulins of the G and M isotopes in blood serum with the single radial immunodiffusion method. Immunoreactivity of blood cells (shift index) was measured with the load test based on the phagocytic cell reaction with S. dublin metabolites. Thus, the shift index in autumn for groups one and two comprised 1.28 and 1.66, respectively. In spring, the functional potential of phagocytes sharply reduced; the index comprised 0.64 and 0.26, respectively. In autumn, the phagocytic activity was 1.8 times lower and the IgG and IgM concentrations were higher in the first-calf heifers produced from the bulls of group two than that in the daughters of the bulls having the steady-state parameter values (group one). The total serum IgG level in the bull sires having the steady-state parameter values correlates with the same parameters of their daughters (r = 0.53), which can serve as a positive factor to inherit this trait.
