To elucidate the structure and dynamics of biomolecules, the CN group has been one of the most popular IR probes. Here, we report the results of our attempt to improve the extinction coefficient and vibrational lifetime of nitrile IR probes and propose the rational design of para-substituted benzonitrile probes concerning the electron-donating effect.
