Performance of the Glycerol–Choline Chloride Deep Eutectic Solvent as an Entrainer for Separation of Ethanol and Water

Entrainer performance of a deep eutectic solvent glycerol–choline chloride 2:1 was tested for separation of ethanol and water. Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibrium data were measured at 101.3 kPa for the quaternary system water + ethanol + glycerol + choline chloride and were successfully modeled using the NRTL equation. Mean absolute deviations were 0.20 K for equilibrium temperature and 0.0038 for ethanol vapor mole fraction. The results showed that the azeotrope of ethanol and water can be removed at a solvent mole fraction of 0.028 with the addition of the deep eutectic solvent, indicating a better separation performance as compared with glycerol, which required a minimum solvent mole fraction of 0.047 for breaking the azeotrope.
