Simultaneous extraction and reduction of gold using sodium tetraphenylborate in polymeric inclusion membranes

In this work, polymeric inclusion membranes were fabricated to extract metals from aqueous solutions using sodium tetraphenylborate as extracting agent. The fabricated membranes showed high selectivity and reactivity towards gold. Tetraphenylborate demonstrated to be efficient as extracting agent, retaining and reducing gold on the membrane surface and generating extraction percentages higher than 90%. The effects of the working solution pH, the composition and thickness of the used membranes on the percentage of gold extracted were determined. The results showed that the studied parameters affect the percentage or time required for metal extraction. Most of the studied membranes showed high gold extraction percentage around three hours after initiating contact with the working solution. Analysis performed by cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy confirmed leaching of tetraphenylborate from the membrane to the aqueous solution. Gold reduction by tetraphenylborate was confirmed by scanning electronic microscopy and it resulted in a layer of gold nanoparticles coating the membrane surface. The presence of a Salen ligand in addition to TPB had effects on the membrane apparency and possibly on the size or structure of the gold nanoparticles.
