Distinguishing among Varied Kinds of Developmental Processes
Human Development ( IF 5.708 ) Pub Date : 2019-01-01 , DOI: 10.1159/000503820
Catherine Raeff

The papers that comprise this special issue of Human Development showcase the challenges and possibilities of conceptualizing and investigating the dynamics of developmental processes. They suggest new directions for theory and research that will keep developmentalists busy for years to come. Although the contributors focus on different specific issues, the papers are united by a process-relational framework, or a process ontology that represents an alternative to the Cartesian-split-mechanistic framework, or the substance ontology that has long dominated psychology, including developmental psychology (Valsiner, 1997; Fischer & Bidell, 2006; Overton, 2013, 2015). Beginning with the first sentence of the Editors’ Introduction, there are calls throughout the papers to conceptualize and investigate behavior and development in terms of dynamic processes. As I read through the papers, I was struck by the array of processes identified and discussed. A challenge is to think about whether there are varied kinds of processes that contribute to and comprise human development in distinct, yet interrelated ways. My goal for this commentary is to build on the papers’ points about processes by suggesting directions for conceptualizing varied kinds of developmental processes. Di Paolo (this issue: see www.karger.com/doi/10.1159/000503827) argues for “thinking in terms of systems, processes, and relations,” as well as relations among processes. He asks how to “distinguish between processes that belong to the agent and the other processes the agent engages with but that also enable cognitive performance.” Di Paolo identifies “a sensorimotor body as an ongoing process.” He explains that “processes of different orders of magnitude and timescale (neural activity, enactments, social interactions, changes in sensorimotor repertoires, cultural practices socialization into language, cultural change, etc.) are all concurrently active and mutually interpenetrate.” Published online: November 29, 2019
