In their integrative paper, “Mindful family routines and the cultivation of executive function skills in childhood,” Semenov and Zelazo (this issue) explore a socially relevant and interesting applied question: what is the “potential power of structured family routines focused on mindfulness and reflection to promote positive behavior change in childhood and buffer the negative influences of poverty and chaos?” To answer this question, the authors provide a creative and boundary-spanning synthesis of theory and research on family systems and the development of children’s executive function (EF) skills, particularly in the context of socioeconomic disadvantage, and theory and research on mindfulness practice and its potential to reduce stress and improve executive function skills in children and their caregivers alike. The paper culminates in a proposed “two-generation embedded approach” to cultivating mindfulness and reflection in families living in poverty. This embedded approach in families, the authors theorize, may be more a fruitful way than “stand-alone” programs to foster children’s EF skill development and transfer to everyday behavior. In this commentary, I briefly summarize the main points of this interesting paper and discuss what I see as some of the main contributions. Along the way, I suggest that this paper is a model of what Roeser and Zelazo (2012) termed a developmental contemplative science (DCS) perspective, an emerging transdisciplinary scholarly effort at the intersection of traditional wisdom traditions and practices (e.g., mindfulness meditation), the humanities and the human sciences that aims to describe and explain the impacts of contemplative practices like mindfulness practice on the brain, body, mind and behavior of individuals in social contexts during different periods of Published online: October 24, 2019
