Testing the efficiency of artificial spawning nests for pikeperch (Sander lucioperca L.) under natural conditions (Lake Balaton, Hungary)

Pikeperch (Sander lucioperca L.) is an important species for European aquaculture and recreation fisheries. The wide range overexploitation of its stock highlights the importance of supporting wild stocks, within its native range. Our study was therefore addressed to test the effectiveness of different artificial spawning nests in a natural habitat. Eight types of artificial nests, characterized with different shape, size and substrate were tested in six localities of Lake Balaton (Hungary), in order to revel the difference between their effectiveness and usability. Nest occupancy was recorded and number of eggs on each nest was calculated and compared. Artificial spawning nests proved to be highly effective for pikeperch spawning under natural conditions, even on suboptimal bottom substrate conditions. Nest size seems to be an important factor: our results suggest at least 0.5 m2 substrate area may be required.
