As interior designers, the urban landscape can easily be considered an expansion of our discipline’s purview. For me, Toronto’s laneways, where rows of closed garage doors would open up during warmer months, offered my first vivid link of the interior with urban dynamism. The sweet aromas from summer kitchens and the fall preserving rituals taking place in these spaces added to the dynamic nature of these otherwise latent urban spaces. The stewing of tomatoes harvested from backyards, the roasting of peppers, and even winemaking occurred while children invented and created their own playgrounds under the watchful eyes of extended family. These makeshift spaces and interiors softened the boundaries of the outside and the inside. Later, as I entered my formal years of education, I sat on a bench in New York’s Central Park and watched people as they lined up at a food cart for their morning coffee and bagel. My newly formed interior design vocabulary kicked in to configure the objects making spaces, assessing proxemics and the invisible walls creating entering and exiting modalities of the stand-alone cart.
