Triplet proximity effect in superconductor/ferromagnet/ferromagnet/ferromagnet/superconductor Josephson junctions

Based on the Green’s function method, we study theoretically the Josephson effect and pair correlations in an s-wave Josephson junction with a ferromagnetic trilayer (SF1F2F3S). The Green’s functions satisfying the Gor’kov equations are calculated numerically without taking the quasiclassical approximation. We focus on the typical case where the left and right ferromagnetic layers are the same (SF1F2F1S). The critical Josephson current is sensitively dependent on the angle α between the exchange fields in the F1 layers and that in the middle F2 layer. In particular, by reconstructing a new spin-triplet correlation function, we are able to find a close correlation between the critical Josephson current and the spin-triplet correlation in their dependences on the angle α. Our results indicate that, the peculiar α-dependence and the related large enhancement of the Josephson current in the SF1F2F1S systems are mostly due to the spin-triplet proximity effect, in contradiction to the results of existing theory [H. Meng, X. Wu, Y. Ren, Journal of Applied Physics 117 (2015) 023903].
