Sarah Quinn’s book is a welcome call to pay more attention to credit than we have done so far. Beyond the relevance of finance per se, American Bonds shows how the state may shape financial markets with goals or interests other than ‘simple’ economic regulation – if anything like that ever exists. Financial markets are shaped by the state, but they, in turn, transform the way in which the state grows and rules. Credit’s fiscal, budgetary, political and ideological ‘lightness’ makes it a particularly well-suited tool to circumvent different types of obstacles. It is in this sense that this book should be highly interesting for scholars researching countries different than the US. While the temporal scope of the study and careful combination of general trajectories analysis and detailed historical scrutiny made any additional comparative perspective impossible, readers will surely find many parallels with their geographical areas of interest.
