ABSTRACT

This study draws on the narratives of tourists, tattoo artists, and studio managers, to examine the processes of tattoo acquisition surrounding tourism experiences and remembrances. In tattoo acquisition, the body emerged as a space for distinctive tourism experiences. The tourists described complex processes of personalisation, shared social interactions, emotionality, and reminiscence in the negotiation of evolving self-concepts. The souvenir tattoo narratives explain how different processes are linked together to enrich the ongoing tourism experiences. Souvenir tattoos can be understood as a temporal and social extension in the process of remembering.
