The name Tahtaci is derived from the Turkish word tahta (wood). The name, which was due to the community’s working with woodcraft for long years, later turned into an ethnic and religious label. In some of the western regions of Turkey, they are also known by the names Turkmens or Tahtaci Turkmens. In Turkey, the Tahtacis had a seminomadic lifestyle until one hundred years ago. Today, they have a fully settled lifestyle, living along the south and western coastline of Turkey, mainly in the rural forest areas of Mersin, Adana, Antalya, Muğla, Denizli, Aydın, İzmir, Balıkesir, and Çanakkale.
