ABSTRACT

This article provides a sociocultural and musicological perspective on the question of how and whereby adolescents in Vienna negotiate their musical preferences and rejections. At the core of the article is the analysis of group discussions which were conducted with 16- to 18-year-old students. The study illustrates the complexity of popular music’s integration in young people’s frameworks of knowledge and discusses how their approaches are guided by different patterns of orientation. It embarks on the necessity of fostering a differentiating view on audiences’ reception of popular music, in connection with meaning-production dynamics, sonic esthetics, and processes of labeling and canonization.
