1 INTRODUCTION

The global threat to biodiversity is one of the central challenges of our time (Sala et al., 2000). In addition to climate change (Comte et al., 2013), habitat loss and structural changes, alien species are among the main causes that alter species communities in freshwaters (Jeschke et al., 2014). However, this threat with its long-term consequences can only be properly assessed if we are able to quickly identify the alien species, trace their pathways (Hulme, 2009) and, if possible, prevent their further spread (Ricciardi et al., 2000). In recent years, invasive gobies have spread in our river systems throughout Europe (Borcherding et al., 2011; Kornis et al., 2012). Even though species identification of adult specimens is regularly quite straightforward based on available literature (e.g., Kottelat & Freyhof, 2007), identification of early juvenile stages remains typically difficult, as some indicative morphological features of the adults are not yet well developed in younger stages. However, it is these stages that are of great importance for tracking spreading, especially because presumably all species complete a more or less pronounced period of dispersal by drift in the early juvenile stages (Borcherding et al., 2016). With this study we would like to present a simple identification key, which allows identifying the early juvenile stages of the most important invasive gobies in European freshwaters with the simplest tools, ideally with a magnifying glass in the field, or at least under the binocular microscope in the laboratory.
