Experimental comparison of shadowing effect and edge effect in pile group of integral bridge

In the pile group under lateral load, two types of interactions between soil and pile occur, namely the shadowing effect and the edge effect. When the piles in the pile group are subjected to the lateral loading, these two effects reduce the bearing capacity of the piles. In the present study, this pile group has been used to inhibit the integral bridge. In this study, the pile group under lateral load was tested in single-row and two-row arrangements. In the two-row arrangement of the piles, the distance of the piles increases compared to the single-row arrangement of the piles, but the effect of the interaction of the piles changes from the edge effect to the shadowing effect. According to the results of this study in the pile group under lateral load, if the distance between the piles is less than 3 D (D: pile dimension), the shadowing effect has a greater effect on the bearing capacity of the pile group compared to the edge effect. According to laboratory tests, the shear strain of the soil around the piles in single-row arrangement is less than in two-row arrangement. As a result, single-row arrangement has more load bearing capacity than two-row arrangement.
