This review summarizes the evolution of the aqueous lithium-ion battery following its inception as a research topic in 1994 up to today's 4?V aqueous lithium-ion battery, tracking the development of LiNO3- and Li2SO4-based electrolytes, the discovery of the passivating properties of high-concentration LiTFSI-based aqueous electrolytes, and the existence of and solution to the ¡°cathodic challenge.¡±
