Willcocks (2020) aims to call attention to the problematic public discourse on artificial intelligence (AI), and shortcomings in the literature on employment effects of technology and the ensuing transformation of work. He offers not only relevant points of critique but works towards reframing the debate about technologies’ impact on work. We join him in this effort, however, we challenge him to deepen and sharpen his arguments. Moreover, we are uncomfortable with his style as it undermines the very credibility that we see as crucial to the ability of academia to contribute to public discourse. In this commentary we examine what we find to be the two main contributions of his article and attempt to expand these perspectives to set the stage for a more nuanced view.
