As the title suggests, A Birth that Changed a Nation: A New Model of Care and Inclusion, is a book that discusses a well established model, which provides a holistic approach for care and inclusion for persons with cerebral palsy and their families. The model was initially established in Mumbai and then replicated in different parts of the country, as people found it important to bring such persons into mainstream society. Children with cerebral palsy (CP) were considered a burden on their families, society and nation as there was no knowledge or mechanisms to address their needs. This model has given new hope to including such children in the frame of development. It not only addresses their health and educational needs, but also extends services to support the psycho-social and economic needs of such people. This book highlights the holistic development approach of the model and how it brought about changes in the lives of people with disability and their families. The reader can easily visualize the model that has evolved through learning and goes beyond the elements of health, education and care of children with cerebral palsy. Strategies adopted by this model such as building professional skills, framing inclusive policies for development and providing the required infrastructure so that people with disability can live independently and with dignity, have been clarified and defined for the layperson. Many success stories of children with cerebral palsy have been cited, which further strengthens the authenticity of the model. I quote:
