The identity of Meistera vespertilio is clarified based on a recent collection of flowering material from the type locality in northern Vietnam. We show that this name has to be applied to a yellow-flowered species with echinate fruits widespread in southern China, northern Laos and Vietnam. This species was misidentified in all previous works as Meistera muricarpa (≡ Amomum muricarpum), another species with white and yellow flowers originally described from the Philippines. The previous lectotypification of M. vespertilio is amended by excluding infructescences and seeds of Zingiber cf. recurvatum from the type material. Meistera verrucosa, morphologically the only closely related species to M. vespertilio in China, is newly reported to occur also in Vietnam. Descriptions of both species, colour plates and notes on their distribution, ecology, phenology and IUCN conservation assessments are provided. The differences between these two species are highlighted, to allow their recognition even in herbarium material.
