Experimental studies on the prevention of staining in building exterior: focused on the sloped wall

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to identify the staining situation through experiments on sloped walls that are vulnerable to staining and to propose basic measures to prevent staining without additional defect management by taking action in advance at the design stage. A total of 68 prototypes were constructed by measuring the critical angle of the six finishing materials and installing them by angle for the experiments of sloped wall. After conducting five experimental surveys for 9 months, it was determined that the gap in the degree of staining from the critical angle was widening and that it was the main factor of the staining. As a result of applying superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity to reduce staining at angles below the critical angle, the efficiency of each material was found to be different, and the higher the absorption rate or the rougher the surface, the better the efficiency of special coating. These results provide convincing evidence in choosing special coatings. In addition, the data collected through the experiments and the multidirectional staining measures according to angle, material, throating and surface coating are expected to be used as a useful alternative to staining prevention in the initial design stage.
