We accept with hesitation the authors’ explanation regarding the “pseudo-second-order” term, which is identical to the one by Ho.(7) Following such a train of thought, the process described by eq 3 which runs toward AS2, should be of first-order with respect to CA and of pseudo-second-order with respect to CAS. Equations 6 and 7 are nonlinear, and likewise, nonlinear is the transformation from eq 6 into eq 7. From the mathematical point of view, eq 6 is an explicit form of the hyperbolic function, and eq 7 is an implicit one. To treat eq 6 as either a linear or a linearized form is a misunderstanding of the concept. The term “linearization” refers to the local approximation of functions with the aid of the Taylor series taking into account both; a constant term and a linear one. The derivation of the Blanchard equation is not attainable with assumptions (i), (ii), and (iii) in place. The falsification of the R2 value stems from the calculation of this quantity done on the basis of the points in the t/q vs t coordinate system, and the resulting straight line adjusted to fit them. The likelihood of a wrong choice of the approximating function would be much lower, however, if the values of k and qe—determined on the basis of the graphical method—were to be plugged into eq 6, and then the value of R2 was calculated. Thus, with only a slight modification of the algorithm this would be enough to get more-reliable results. A frequent cause for additional falsification of R2 values also may be present if one takes into account too many points laying close to the equilibrium state. A spurious R2 value may also be obtained for a data set, if the range of change in q is too small. The suggestion, which may be worth considering, is to assess the quality of fit of the approximating function to kinetic data, based on changes in standardized residual (eq 13), as the function of time. Alternative evaluation methods exist as well. But first and foremost, one needs to pay attention to the quality of experimental data. The authors declare no competing financial interest.
