ABSTRACT The article reads Schmitt’s Die Buribunken as a text that points to and names the enemies of the political who attempt to deny or hide the necessity and the unavoidability of politics, decision, and sovereignty. In this regard, the significance of the satirical essay consists in that it links Schmitt’s early works on the limits of positivism to his later writings on political theory thereby extending the criticism of a contemporary legal scholarship into a theoretical and polemical grasp of politics. The Buribunken-essay sets fiction against positivist factuality the key feature of buribunkology, the science of the buribunks to make the case for the repoliticisation of the antipolitical trends of the age. The article places the Buribunken-essay in the context of some works written between the 1910s and the late 1930s to argue that it should be read as an early version of Schmitt’s political theory.
