ABSTRACT This paper is about Spaces of Justice and the role the Neighbourhood Justice Centre (Collingwood, Victoria) plays in providing a safe space for Community Justice to be carried out. It is based on the reflections the author provided at the Space of Justice symposium in Melbourne in July 2017, about access to justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities who gather in the local government area of Yarra. The author relates her feeling of removal from Country in reading and navigating the space of urban environment and highlights the importance of the kind of ‘gathering place’ that the Neighbourhood Justice Centre can become for those who similarly must navigate alienating colonial power and court spaces. In doing so, she demonstrates the possibilities for a court building to become the anchor of a community, rather than a punitive space of (in)justice.
