Abstract

Little-known publications and new data from central, regional, and museum archives on study of the Ainu of Sakhalin in the period after the Second World War are analyzed. The leading role of scientists from academic institutions in collecting information about the culture, language, and anthropology of this ethnic group is noted. The Soviet scientific school focused on the problems of the race and ethnogenesis of the Ainu community. With the growth of political tension during the period of late Stalinism, scientific materials about the Ainu fell into the category of secret. In this regard, many of the photographs, field records, and reports collected in those years, as well as data from the Ainu census, were removed from the archives and still remain inaccessible. Political challenges have significantly limited the implementation of plans and the thematic diversity of studies. The surviving archival manuscripts must be introduced into scientific circulation.
