examples, Tinnell refreshingly returns the digital into the aesthetic. In particular, Tinnell’s discussion of how the digitally constructed is spatially orientated drives home the importance of linking rhetoric to ubiquitous computing. On occasion, Tinnell strays more into historical review, particularly with regard to Weiser (aforementioned) and Bernard Steigler—each has nearly an entire column of mentions in the index. However, by the time the reader has finished Actionable Media, this minor criticism is drowned out by his consistent use of textured examples. These range from an unpacking of GPS navigation’s ability to “conjoin lived perception and technical memory” (p. 76) to how the act of walking in Teri Rueb’s Itinerant serves as a nondiscursive action that delivers “structural agency for readers” (p. 134). Tinnell concludes with an “Epilogue,” an appropriately named chapter given the engaging narrative of his book. Within this epilogue, he proposes the idea of the “kairotic” intellectual, a term designed to reflect a shift towards the employment of ubiquitous computing by students and scholars within locales, generating and disseminating humanities knowledge to broader audiences. Despite Tinnell’s attempts to explore ubiquitous computing beyond the desktop and mobile phone, his examples and evidence suggest that mobile devices remain the dominant lens through which this shift can be imagined. To this extent, Actionable Media can be seen as a call to action made amidst an ongoing paradigm shift. Through a pushing forward of both technology and terminology, Tinnell powerfully finishes on the notion that actionable media enables the delivery of “the right words at the right time in the right place” (p. 223). This call for intervention is well made by Tinnell throughout Actionable Media, and the onus now falls on academics and artists alike to deliver the rise of the kairotic intellectual.
