Wideband transmitarray antenna using Electric ring resonator shaped slot element

This paper proposes a low-profile, low-cost, and wideband quad-layer element for designing transmitarray antenna (TA). Changing the dimensions of the element shifts its passband. Sometimes, this shift is so large that the passband of the element exits the desired operating band of the TA. In other words, areas of the passband with low transmission magnitudes match the desired operating band. In this case, elements with low transmission magnitudes have no beneficial effect on the total gain of the array, and the gain drops, thus shrinking the bandwidth. The bandwidth of the proposed element is so wide that passbands corresponding to different dimensions of the elements overlap in a large area around the central frequency. To display the effect of this feature, a 14×14-element TA is designed and manufactured using the proposed element. The measurement results indicate a 1-dB bandwidth of 18.4% and 54% aperture efficiency.
