Sustainable synthesis of five-membered heterocycles using carbon dioxide and Fe-iminopyridine catalysts

Sustainable Fe-iminopyridine catalysts were investigated for the formation of five-membered heterocycles, cyclic carbonates and oxazolidinones from carbon dioxide and epoxides, aziridines and propargyl amines respectively. The homoleptic and heteroleptic Fe catalysts were prepared by a convenient self-assembly protocol. The optimal catalyst contained a hydrogen bond donor to activate substrate ring opening and a nucleophilic imidazole group to activate the CO2 electrophile. This approach represents a green CO2 recycling method to afford value-added chemicals with potential industrial applications.
