Lasers for matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry was introduced over 30 years ago, and it now plays a key role in several areas, including the characterization of microorganisms and tissue imaging. Lasers are, of course, a central component in MALDI mass spectrometers, but in commercial systems, the type of laser is determined by the instrument manufacturer, and for the operator, their only practical consideration is the selection of the optimal laser power, or fluence, that gives them the best quality spectrum for a given sample and matrix combination.
