Influences of La addition on the hydrogen storage performances of TiFe-base alloy

In this paper, La is partial substituted for Ti to improving the hydrogen storage performance of TiFe alloy. The Ti1-xLaxFe0.8Mn0.2 (x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.06, 0.09) alloys were prepared by induction melting under vacuum. The influences of La on the microstructure, gaseous hydrogen absorption and thermodynamics were investigated. It was found from the X-ray diffraction results that all the alloys contained the single TiFe phase, the substitution of La does not change the phase composition of the alloys. The lattice parameters decreased with La substitution. And TiFeH and TiFeH2 hydride were detected after hydrogenation process. The hydrogen absorption kinetic property of Ti1-xLaxFe0.8Mn0.2 (x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.06, 0.09) alloys is improved by La substitution. The maximum hydrogen storage capacity of Ti1-xLaxFe0.8Mn0.2 (x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.06, 0.09) alloys is 1.621, 1.633, 1.54, 1.532, 1.328 wt%, respectively at 3 MPa 323 K after activation. La substitution has significant effect on the P–C-T curves of the alloys, the plateaus pressure of TiFe to TiFeH heightened by La substitution increasing. Furthermore, the enthalpy and entropy changes of the hydrogenation/dehydrogenation at different temperatures were also calculated by Van't Hoff equation. The hydrogenation enthalpy ΔHab were −30.1, −31.7, −27.0, −27.7 and −27.4 kJ/mol H2, respectively.
