This year began with our gratitude and our goodbyes to Paul Willis and Peter Geschiere, colloquially known as Peter and Paul, as editors of this journal. And it continues with a final essay by Paul Willis and Mats Trondman, the founders of Ethnography. Their collaboration didn’t start with the first issue of the first volume of Ethnography in 2000, but rather 25 years ago, when they began exploring the possibilities of a journal that would center “lived experience” as the starting point for the ethnographic task, and as the necessary ground for the theorization that is part of this task. Their efforts were part of the “turn to lived experience”, which has been tangible in the past decades in different ways – Ethnography played its part in this turn. Twenty-five years later, Paul and Mats look back at this affirmation of lived experience and the traction it gained, within and beyond the social sciences. They also point to possible hazards, when lived experiences are fixed in essentialized identity categories and when such a fixating move translates into a loss of common ground. And they argue for a return to the commons, and notably for a deeper understanding and sharing of processes of meaning-making and cultural production with all the power dynamics that are integral to these.
