Typomorphic Features of Garnets and Zircons from the Middle Neopleistocene Moraines in the Northern and Southern Timan–Pechora–Vychegda Region

Abstract

The typomorphism and chemical composition of garnets and zircons were studied in the Pechora (Dnieper) and Vychegda (Moscow) Middle Neopleistocene moraines in the Laya and Vychegda river valleys of the northern and southern Timan–Pechora–Vychegda region, respectively, to substantiate a detailed subdivision and correlation of Quaternary sections. The moraines contain garnets of two color groups: orange and pink. Moraines in the Laya River valley are dominated by pink garnets. Thereby, their content in the Pechora moraine is higher than in the Vychegda moraine. The orange garnets from the Pechora moraine are dominated by pyrope–almandine with grossular admixture, while those from the Vychegda moraine are represented by five varieties, including almandine–spessartine ones. The pink garnets are mainly pyrope‒almandine in composition. The Vychegda moraine also contains grossular. In the Vychegda River valley, the Pechora moraine is enriched in pink garnets, while the Vychegda till is dominated by orange garnets. In both moraines, garnets are dominated by almandine, with variable amounts of pyrope and grossular impurities. The Pechora moraine, unlike the Vychegda moraine, contains the spessartine‒grossular‒almandine variety. The composition of pink garnets in both horizons in the Vychegda River valley is almost identical. Zircons from both moraines are similar in morphology and chemical composition. The presence of zircons in moraines is related to their redeposition from disintegrated igneous rocks of acid, intermediate, and basic compositions and metamorphic basement rocks. Values of the indicator ZrO2/HfO2 ratio in zircons from the Vychegda moraine in the northern part of the region (Laya River) indicate their supply from metamorphic complexes of the Northwestern (Fennoscandian) provenance and Northern Timan. Zircons in moraines in the Vychegda River valley were mainly redeposited from acid, intermediate, and basic igneous rocks, and only a insignificant part of them came from metamorphic rocks.
