Abstract

When conducting seismological studies, initial data from different international seismological agency databases are often used. Determinations of earthquake hypocentral coordinates by different seismological agencies yield different results, associated with different observation systems, processing methods, and high-speed models. This can significantly affect the overall picture of the seismic process under study. Therefore, to identify the most preferable result, we assessed the accuracy of the initial data and hypocentral coordinates from different interpretations. Based on the international seismological agency data, the study refines the parameters of a tectonic earthquake recorded in northern Armenia on September 10, 2019, with a magnitude of M = 4.7, as well as its aftershocks, and redetermines the hypocentral coordinates using the Hypo_Bur program. Due to the high accuracy in redetermining the hypocenters of the main and aftershocks (the error in determining the hypocentral coordinates is in the range 0.1–2.4 km), the local nature of the seismogenic zone is revealed. As a result of the redetermination, the initial epicenter of the main shock was shifted 28 km northwest, and the overall pattern of the spatial distribution of aftershocks became more clustered. The focal mechanisms of the September 10, 2019 earthquake and its aftershocks were also plotted. A similar character of the kinematics of the Chaldyran–Viraayotsky fault and obtained values of the main nodal plane of the focal mechanism is shown.
