IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science ( IF 1.8 ) Pub Date : 2021-05-18 , DOI: 10.1109/tns.2021.3077331

Joseph C. Peden, age 86, died on April 21, 2020, from heart failure. He was born in Smithton, PA (near Pittsburgh), USA, on December 27, 1934. He earned a degree in nuclear engineering from Penn State University, State College, PA, USA, in 1956. He began his professional career at the Hanford Plutonium Works in Richland, WA, USA, which at that time was managed by General Electric (GE). During that time, he attended graduate school (part-time), and received the M.S. degree in physics from Washington State University. In 1964, he moved to the GE Space Division in Valley Forge, PA, where GE was working on the NASA Landsat satellite. His initial work was on solar cell research. That evolved into satellite survivability studies, including critical hardware for several NASA spacecraft that were supported by GE.
