In her commentary printed in this issue, Jane Erin, the Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness’s (JVIB) editor emerita, describes how early in her career she was given the advice to “call the American Foundation for the Blind” whenever she had a question about issues related to the fields of education and rehabilitation of people with visual impairments. I am someone who was given similar counsel about the resources of the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB). Just now, I wanted to know how many people living in this country have visual impairments, so I turned to AFB’s website. There, I learned that 2018 estimates from a respected national survey established that over 32 million Americans report having trouble seeing, even when wearing corrective lenses. That number represents approximately 13% of all adults in the United States—more than 1 in every 10 people.
