ABSTRACT

Professional and competent ethical decision-making relies on a counselor’s ability to examine potential personal biases and cultural differences. Experiential activities can assist counselors-in-training to practice challenging skills, including culturally sensitive ethical decision-making. This manuscript introduces and describes an experiential activity utilizing The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down as a tool to enhance multicultural awareness within ethical-decision making among counselors-in-training. This activity can help counselors examine prejudices, gain self-awareness, and understand how cultural differences can influence ethical decision-making. Ethical decision-making models are reviewed as well as (a) the importance of multicultural awareness (b) support for using experiential techniques in counselor training, and (c) an introduction and application of a conceptual framework for the use of The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down in ethical and multicultural training.
