This study applies an acoustic–phonetic approach to examine the variability in 30 speakers’ face vowel productions over three semi-spontaneous speaking tasks that utilise different interlocutors. The aim of this research is to establish how much within-speaker variability is present across a range of forensically-relevant scenarios. These underpinning observations are subsequently evaluated in order to consider the extent to which accommodation could impact forensic speaker comparison (FSC) casework. The face vowel is of particular interest as it is said to have high levels of variation in West Yorkshire English speech and appears to be socially salient in this region. After measuring within-speaker variability and Euclidean distances between interlocutors, an evaluation of how robust face is to the influence of varying speech styles and interlocutors was undertaken. Applying a broad definition of accommodation to capture both of these elements, results indicate that face is influenced by accommodation for many speakers. However, the extent to which speakers adapt their face productions is highly variable across individual speakers, both in terms of the direction and amount of accommodation observed. The implications of these findings are addressed from both a FSC casework perspective and also in terms of sociolinguistic research practices more generally.
