Joseph P. Reidy is a professor emeritus of history and retired associate provost at Howard University. He is the author, most recently, of Illusions of Emancipation: The Pursuit of Freedom and Equality in the Twilight of Slavery (University of North Carolina Press, 2019), winner of the Bancroft Prize and a finalist for the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize. Reidy took his B.A. in sociology from Villanova University before earning an M.A. and Ph.D. from Northern Illinois University. He served as editor and acting co-director of the Freedmen and Southern Society Project at the University of Maryland, College Park, from 1977 to 1984. In 1992 he published From Slavery to Agrarian Capitalism in the Cotton Plantation South: Central Georgia, 18001880 with University of North Carolina Press. In 1994, he and his coeditors Ira Berlin, Barbara J. Fields, Steven F. Miller, and Leslie S. Rowland won the Lincoln Prize for Free at Last: A Documentary History of Slavery, Freedom, and the Civil War (New Press, 1992). Reidy also coedited, with Ira Berlin and Leslie S. Rowland, The Black Military Experience as part of the series Freedom: A Documentary History of Emancipation, 1861–1867 (Cambridge University Press, 1982).

Allison Dorsey is a professor of history at Swarthmore College and the author of To Build Our Lives Together: Community Formation in Black Atlanta, 18751906 (University of Georgia Press, 2004). A former research fellow at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Papers Project at Stanford University, she took her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine. From 2014 to 2017 she served as founding director of the Swarthmore Summer Scholars Program. Her work has received multiple grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

John David Smith is the Charles H. Stone Distinguished Professor of American History at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He is the author or editor of dozens of books on the history of the South, including Soldiering for Freedom: How the Union Army Recruited, Trained, and [End Page 377] Deployed the United States Colored Troops (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2014), coauthored with Bob Luke; Lincoln and the U.S. Colored Troops (Southern Illinois University Press, 2013); and Seeing the New South: Race and Place in the Photographs of Ulrich Bonnell Phillips, coauthored with Patricia Bellis Bixel (University of South Carolina Press, 2013).

Amy Murrell Taylor is T. Marshall Hahn Jr. Professor of History at the University of Kentucky. Her most recent book, Embattled Freedom: Journeys through the Civil War's Slave Refugee Camps (University of North Carolina Press, 2018), won the Frederick Douglass Book Prize, the John Nau Book Prize, the Tom Watson Brown Book Award, and the Merle Curti Award. Taylor took her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and first taught at the University of Albany, State University of New York, where she received the College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching.

In accordance with Article IX of the SHA constitution, these nominations will become effective after the annual meeting in New Orleans this year, unless fifty members present a petition for an alternative nominee by September 1, 2021. SHA vice president Glenda Elizabeth Gilmore has appointed Crystal N. Feimster, Yale University, and Stephen Kantrowitz, University of Wisconsin–Madison, to be the co-chairs of the Program Committee for the 2022 meeting in Baltimore.
