Chemical Composition and Antioxidant Activity of Root Essential Oil of Different Salvia leriifolia Populations

Abstract

Salvia leriifolia is an endemic to Iran belongs to Lamiaceae. This plant has numerous valuable properties, including analgesics, anti-inflammatories, sedatives, antioxidants and has significant applications in the medical, pharmaceutical and food industries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of essential oils roots S. leriifolia collected from six natural habitats in the northeast of Iran. Analysis of essential oils was performed by GC/FID and GC/MS techniques. Torbat-e Heydarieh (0.06 % w/w) had the highest and Baghjar (0.02 % w/w) had the lowest oil content. It was found that the essential oils were rich in diterpenes such as abietatriene (32.5-39.4 %), labda-7,13-dien-15-ol acetate (23.2-30.8%) and ferruginol (7.9-12.0 %). The essential oils were assessed for radical scavenging activity using the DPPH assay. The most active sample was the essential oil from Torbat-e Heydarieh with an IC50 value of 0.15 ± 0.09 mg/ml.
