On 2 March 2021 the UK was under the influence of a large anticyclone centred over the North Sea. A gentle east to southeasterly flow affected much of the country, which advected a large sheet of stratus cloud across many central and eastern parts. This cloud sheet was shallow – this image from NASA's AQUA satellite shows the effect of ranges of hills, such as the Pennines, on ‘blocking’ the westwards advection of the cloud. On 23 March 2021 an area of low pressure was located northwest of Scotland, with a broad south to south‐westerly flow across Britain and Ireland. Low‐level moisture was sufficient for a rather extensive cloud cover, mainly stratocumulus. Low‐level stability also allowed for terrain‐induced standing waves to develop, which manifested themselves as transverse waves in the cloud pattern, seen clearly here in this image from NASA's AQUA satellite.
