Abstract
The falseness of the idea about the independence of contact deformation of circular cylinders on their radius is shown. It is demonstrated that the total deformation of the roller and the plate is independent of the radius as observed in experiments with the roller compressed between two plates made of the same materials. It is stated that the known formula calculating the contact deformation of cylinders in the reference books is not accurate. Our study reveals that the statement about the linear dependence of the contact deformation of the rollers on the load is incorrect. It provides an explanation why, when the radius of the cylinder under sustained load increases, its contact deformation also increases. It is indicated that N.M. Belyaev’s formula cannot be adjusted with arbitrary correction coefficients.
