Applying electromagnetic surveys as pre-screening tools prior to open dump mining

The electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) survey is a common geophysical survey for characterising waste in final disposal sites. However, the ERT survey is costly in terms of labour, price, and time requirements. This research aims to investigate the feasibility of using an electromagnetic (EM) survey in the preliminary assessment of waste quality for refuse-derived fuel (RDF) production. In this study, the EM survey was carried out together with an ERT survey. The two surveys were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively, and the results showed a correlation between them. It was determined that EM surveys have the potential to identify and locate the different kinds of waste suitable for use in the RDF production process. EM surveys identify waste composition through low electrical conductivity values that correlate with high electrical resistivity values in ERT surveys. Therefore, EM surveys are a suitable pre-screening tool in open dump mining that can combat ERT survey limitations and increase the efficiency of waste investigation.
