ABSTRACT

In recent years, significant attempts have been made to harness the exceptional thermal, electrical and mechanical properties of wonder material “Graphene” by employing it as reinforcement in aluminum matrix composites. Graphene reinforced aluminum matrix composites offer excellent strength, stiffness, hardness, wear and thermal properties. The developed composites find wide applications in electronics, optics, sensors, aerospace, and automobiles. Solid as well as liquid routes are being used for the synthesis of these composites. Solid processing routes result in the development of aluminum matrix composites with uniformly dispersed graphene. The present study attempts to present an overview on the state of the art of graphene-aluminum matrix composites produced using solid routes like powder metallurgy, friction stir processing and routes employing the principle of severe plastic deformation. The impact of process variables, quantity and type of graphene on the mechanical and metallurgical properties of composites are presented and discussed. This review also outlines the applications, future research scopes, and challenges related to the synthesis of graphene/aluminum composites.
