We demonstrate the optical imaging of objects through highly scattering media using a subtractive optical Kerr gate (SOKG). The SOKG extracts ballistic light via a subtraction operation involving a speckle-suppressed image using supercontinuum illumination and a background image captured with the ballistic light temporally excluded. By using this method, the contrast is significantly enhanced, while the sharpness and spatial resolution of the image are also significantly improved relative to traditional optical Kerr gate imaging. This imaging approach shows immense potential for applications involving the observation of the high-speed breakup of liquid cores in strongly scattering fuel sprays.
